Little
Snowflake Comes Home
Bob Choi
“I wanna get out of here, mom!” Lil’ Snowflake yelled at the
snowcap on the mountaintop. “We’re
in the middle of nowhere. Nothing
happens here. It’s so boring. I wanna go down the
mountain. I wanna see the world!”
“Oh Nina, my
Lil’ Snowflake, be patient! The time will come. You’ll be free soon.”
“No, mom, I hate
this place and I hate you keep mothering me. I wish I’d leave this mountain and
never come back!”
Her wish was
granted
as the first
summer ray struck,
melting the snow cover.
Lil’ Snowflake
changed her form,
trickling down the
mountainside.
“Hooray, hooray,
I’m free at last!”
“Oh
Nina, my Lil’ Snowflake, farewell!”
But she didn’t
even look back!
Joining other
free kindred,
Lil’ Snowflake
bobbed
along the brooks and
creeks,
down the canals and
mighty rivers,
through the valleys and
meadows,
crisscrossing villages, towns
and cities.
She made many
friends
and enjoyed all
summer long.
Till one day in
early fall,
she was ushered
into the sea,
where monstrous
creatures were lurking
and storms and
maelstroms howling.
She was drifting
aimlessly,
not a sanctuary in
sight.
“Oh, how I
missed life on the mountaintop!
I wish I’d go
home into the arms of my mom!”
Her wish was
granted
as the sea breeze
lifted her into the air,
riding an armada of
clouds,
sailing over the
meadows and valleys
and hovering above
the mountaintop.
Falling through
the air, she called out:
“It’s Lil’
Snowflake, I’m coming home –
Mom, I’m coming
home!”
Splash!
She found
herself splattered
on the barren
mountaintop.
The snowcap had
been long gone,
for it was a very
hot summer.
(But she didn’t
even look back!)
