It’s Valentine’s Day again today. So how are you going to celebrate it with your loved one?
If you are a true romantic, how about whispering this famous love poem by E.E. Cummings to your dearest after your candle lit dinner?
I carry your heart with me by E. E. Cummings (1894 – 1962)
I carry your heart with me (i carry it in
my heart) i am never without it (anywhere
I go you go, my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing, my darling)
i fear
no fate (for you are my fate, my sweet) i want
no world (for beautiful you are my world, my true)
and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
And the sky of the sky of a tree called life; which grows
higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that’s keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart (i carry it in my heart)
What do you mean it’s too long and too hard to recite? OK, write it on a blank Valentine card and leave it on his/her pillow!
A bit too staid?! Then what about this hilarious one by the British punk performance poet, John Cooper Clarke? The poem was adapted by the band, Arctic Monkeys into a pop song. I bet this will certainly make him/her laugh!
I wanna be your vacuum cleaner
breathing in your dust
I wanna be your Ford Cortina
I will never rust
If you like your coffee hot
let me be your coffee pot
You call the shots
I wanna be yours
I wanna be your raincoat
for those frequent rainy days
I wanna be your dreamboat
when you want to sail away
Let me be your teddy bear
Take me with you anywhere
I don’t care
I wanna be yours
I wanna be your electric meter
I will not run out
I wanna be the electric heater
you’ll get cold without
I wanna be your setting lotion
hold your hair in deep devotion
Deep as the deep Atlantic Ocean
That’s how deep is my emotion
Deep deep deep deep de deep deep
I don’t wanna be hers
I wanna be yours
OK, OK! I can see that you are sneering and saying you’re too old and no longer believe in Valentine’s Day as it’s only a handy marketing peg for retailers between Christmas and Easter. And yet, give me one more chance, read the next one by my favorite poet and you’ll definitely change your mind!
Another Valentine by Wendy Cope (1945 -)
Today we are obliged to be romantic
And think of yet another valentine.
We know the rules and we are both pedantic:
Today’s the day we have to be romantic.
Our love is old and sure, not new and frantic.
You know I’m yours and I know you are mine.
And saying that has made me feel romantic,
My dearest love, my darling valentine.
Happy Valentine’s Day!
