This issue has been existing for decades. From day 1, when the HK residency has been challenged to the Court of Final Appeal, there are some groups of the people in HK has been determined to weaken the legitimacy of the HKSAR government. Since the handover, there are different cleavages that divided the people of HK and the HKSAR government. From self interest of local communities, the chief executive election, the use of the budget, the sky-rocketing price of the property, to national education. Insulting government officials or paralyzing government activities seem to become a noble act. Those who fight against the government become the fighter of justice, while media digs out all the histories of government officials (but is there anyone using the same investigation level to check the MPs? Are they really "this clean" for their whole life?) 30, 40 years ago in order to prove how evil the government officials are. Who ever joined the government wegan, all the histories will be revealed and less people are willing to come out and serve the people in Hong Kong.
From my pessimistic point of view, I believe the critical mass, especially in the mass media, has developed. The media will choose the news that in favour of some particular political parties, if not to particular politicians. Newspaper, internet, even the online social network becomes their tools for propaganda to work against the government. If opposition voices are raising, people will be addressed as "pro-communists", "brain-washed" or sterotyped as the servant for the CCP... which immediately equals to the people who will betray HK and sell all the benefits to the Communist Party. Their daily life will be posted and somehow, they can write a story through creative writing. Some government officials were accused of corruption, officials resigned and at the end were found clean on the issues being accused by the media. Things are settled, media moves to another story, but the government and Hong Kong has lost a player who dares to step up and contribute to Hong Kong.
I believe such atmosphere has become a norm and in fact more and more people are accepting such point of view nowadays.
I wonder if some political parties really want to have a universal sufferage on the Chief Executive or not. If the Chief Executive is getting support through democratic process, those political parties may have no say on the legitimacy and may not be as easy to work against the government as now.
"Ice with 3 feet thick won't get frozen in one day".
It's a gradual process. People get brain-washed through a process similar to "cooking a frog with warm water". People are being pulled to a certain political point of view through different type of propagandas... and when people realize how serious the problem is, the water is already at boiling point and the frog is already cooked.
I think such statement can apply for both sides.
My prayer to the future of Hong Kong!
